This technique uses electrical impulses on the muscle nerve bundles. Within this technique we discern TENS (Transcutaneus Electrical Nerve Stimulation) on the one hand and NMES (Neuro Muscular Electrical Stimulation) on the other.
TENS uses a large amount of electrical impulses at a low intensity. The electrical impulses flood the nervous system, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain and thus relieving pain. This is what we call the gate control theory.
This technique is very effective in controlling or alleviating pain as long as the device is switched on and up to 2 hours after it has been switched off.
NMES
NMES uses a device that sends a small amount of electrical impulses at a high intensity to the nerves. This input causes muscles to contract gently. The impulses release endorphins (i.e. painkillers naturally produced by the body) to relieve pain. NMES can also be used to release tension in the muscles or to retain muscle power.
